Chemical FAQs
What’s the difference between Chlorine Shock and Non-Chlorine Shock?
THIS QUESTION IS CURRENTLY BEING UPDATED WITH NEW INFORMATION – CHECK BACK SOON! FOR THE TIME BEING WE RECOMMEND NON-CHLORINE SHOCK
Which is better Chlorine or Bromine?
Both sanitisers are very effective at disinfecting and sanitising Pool and Hot Tub water. It’s all down to a matter of personal choice and budget. Chlorine products can often work out much cheaper than Bromine products, whereas others prefer Bromine over chlorine as it is kinder to skin and better for those with any sensitive skin issues or who may have a bad skin reaction to chlorine.
Can standard stabilised chlorine be used as a shock treatment?
It can be used as a shock treatment but it is not recommended. Using standard stabilised chlorine will increase the amount of Cyanuric acid in the water. Cyanuric acid is a chemical compound used primarily in chlorine granules as a stabiliser to prevent premature chlorine loss from sunlight. Although a shock dose of standard chlorine granules, up to 5x the regular amount should cure any algae issues, we would recommend, should you wish to go down this route, only doing it to outdoor pools and tubs that are exposed to bright sunlight. This way the sunlight will help deplete increased Cyanuric acid levels more quickly. Using a standard shock of Calcium Hypochlorite or a Non-Chlorine Shock containing Oxone™ will not increase Cyanuric acid levels.
